Surrender
Requirements to Surrendering a Labrador Retriever to Rescue
  • The Labrador Rescue of Nova Scotia recognized the tremendous need to provide temporary shelter and ultimately, to find permanent homes for dogs in need. Owing to the limited resources of Lab Rescue, as we are not a shelter but rely on in home foster care, the following procedures have been established regarding the surrendering of a Labrador Retriever or Lab-mix to the rescue:
  • The current owner or guardian of the dog must complete the surrender form.
  • The dog must be a pure bred Lab or somewhat reasonable Lab-mix (the Lab must resemble a Lab physically more than any other breed) and must be no older than 10 years of age.
  • Pictures of the dog must be submitted with the surrender application (either in print or electronically). Or someone from the board must meet the dog to determine eligibility.
  • A surrender fee of $50 must be paid to Lab rescue if the dog is not spayed or neutered prior to acceptance into rescue.
  • The dog must have a typical Lab temperament (happy, silly, goofy, friendly, loving) and must not have shown signs of aggression towards other dogs, animals or humans.
  • The dog must not be terminally ill.
  • The dog must be adoptable.
  • The decision to accept a dog in the surrender program of Labrador Rescue must be approved by a minimum of two Board Members. The Labrador Rescue of Nova Scotia recognizes that surrender situation are most often of an urgent nature, and therefore will make every effort to arrive at a decision within 48 hours of receiving a completed Surrender Form. Please note that an incomplete application may delay the decision process.
  • The Labrador Rescue of Nova Scotia will not accept a dog into the surrender program until all forms have been fully completed and, if applicable, the surrender fee has been paid.
  • Please note that while we do our best to answer in a timely fashion and accommodate as much as possible we are all volunteers who foster in our own homes. We may not always have the space for your dog and therefore you may be required to keep your dog until adopted or a foster becomes available.
